Let’s talk about passkeys.
Passkeys are the future of signing up and logging in. They solve the risks and frustrations that come with passwords, and they let you set up credentials and securely access your accounts in seconds. Passkeys are just starting to catch on, but eventually, passkeys will replace passwords, and we’ll all be safer for it.
But if passkeys are so simple to use, how can they be secure? To understand that, we need to take a closer look at the technology behind them.
A passkey refers to a pair of keys that are created, stored, and retrieved automatically to sign you in. One half of the passkey is stored on your device or in your password manager, and the other half stays with the website or app. When you sign in using a passkey, the two halves work together to authenticate the login—instantly and securely.
Cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to steal your passwords or trick you into revealing them. But with passkeys, that’s pretty much impossible.
When you log in with a password, the password—or secret—is transmitted between you and the website, and it can potentially be stolen along the way. Passwords can be used on multiple accounts and are prone to phishing attacks, and phishing is one of the top causes of data breaches. Passkeys, on the other hand, are phishing resistant because they’re uniquely tied to a website and can’t be reused on multiple accounts. In short, passkeys can’t be stolen: They’re an innovative and easy-to-use solution to the phishing problem.
All this makes for faster, easier, and more secure sign-ins. And since there’s nothing to remember with passkeys, you’ll never forget them.
